When you browse the web for gaming monitors or aks experts for their recommendations, they usually come with a model that is full of bells and whistles and are way too expensive. Gaming on a budget is a thing, and in this ViewSonic XG2402 review, we explain why you don’t need a fancy gaming monitor to have good gaming experience.
The ViewSonic XG2402 is an affordable gaming monitor that comes under $180. At this price, there are not many gaming monitors that give you the same level of performance. The performance per dollar of this monitor is insane and you will be hardpressed to find something that comes close. Is this gaming monitor worth the price? Let dive into this full review and find out.
There are two design languages when it comes to gaming monitors. You will find either flashy monitors or the minimalistic ones. The ViewSonic XG2402 gaming display is clearly a minimalistic monitor that comes with a very stealthy design.
The design language of this display is still a bit old. The bezels around the display are still from a few years ago and will stand out with the current crop of gaming displays (not for the right reasons). The thick bezels are unappealing but they are not a dealbreaker in any way. They do not disturb you when you’re gaming which is nice.
Let’s talk about the stand for a bit. Usually, in budget monitors, you do not get a lot of options when it comes to the stand. You get a cheaply built stand that is not durable. Fortunately, the ViewSonic XG2402 takes the stand very seriously.
We have an aluminum stand that comes with a nice build and a sturdy outlook. The stand is firm and doesn’t wobble when pushed. It is durable and will last a good period. The stand also comes with a handful of features that you usually find in high-end gaming laptops. To be more accurate, you won’t find these features in affordable laptops.
What are these features you ask? You can adjust the height of the display which will come in handy at times. You can swivel the display left and right so giving presentations or playing multiplayer games is easier. The stand also allows you to pivot the display into a vertical one which is a great position when you’re coding or working on web design or any kind of design. There is also the option to tilt the display forward and back to a certain degree which is nice.
Can you mount the ViewSonic XG2402 on the wall? Yes, you can. We can use the VESA mount to attach this display to the wall. The display also has a cable management loop that helps to keep the wire clutter to a minimum and makes things look a lot cleaner.
The ViewSonic XG2402 comes with a couple of inbuilt 2W speakers. These are average quality speakers that work well in a small room. If you currently don’t have a speaker with you, these should be fine for the time being. But gaming or media consumption with these speakers is not a great idea. You should invest in a good gaming headphone if you take your gaming seriously.
How is the ports situation? There are not a lot of ports on this ViewSonic model. You get a couple of HDMI 1.4 ports, a display port 1.2, a couple of USB 2.0 gen A ports, and also an audio jack. These are essential ports, and having them does help. Another good design is that all these ports are facing down. This is super helpful when you plan to mount the display on the wall.
Let’s talk about the things that matter. The ViewSonic XG2402 model comes with a 23.8″ LED-backlit display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. Most gamers prefer a minimum of full HD resolution on their display, and we have it here. The not so good news here is that we do not have an IPS panel, thanks to the low price.
The monitor comes with a TN panel which is inferior to an IPS panel. The monitor does have a noticeable difference when it comes to picture quality and viewing angles. The viewing angles are bad and you must sit in front of the display to get the best images on the screen.
The monitor comes with a maximum brightness of 350 nits. Considering the price of this gaming display, this is a pretty good max brightness. Even if you’re going to play in a brightly lit room, this monitor will shine bright enough to keep your attention on the screen. As one would expect, the quality of colors does take a bit as the brightness increases. We would suggest staying at 50% for a neat viewing experience.
Though this is not an IPS panel, the contrast ratio is still decent at 1000:1. The blacks are deep enough to give you a good sense of the image on the screen. The whites are bright and the grayscale performance of the display is quite good as well. The contrast ratio also takes a hit when you reach for a higher brightness which is another reason to keep it low.
The ViewSonic XG2402 gaming monitor comes with a refresh rate of 144Hz and a response time of 1ms. The refresh rate is fantastic for a budget gaming monitor and enables you to have smooth gaming experience.
The response time, on the other hand, helps us to reduce motion blur and ghosting to an absolute minimum. Whenever there is a fast action on your game, this response time will help in keeping the motion blur low thereby providing your a stellar visual adventure.
The input lag in this ViewSonic XG2402 model is also quite low. The number here is 4ms which is great considering this is an affordable gaming monitor. We’re not sure if this is going to help you win in a gaming competition. But if you’re playing in a non-competitive space, this low input lag will come in handy.
There is another feature by the name of black stabilization that we have found useful. With black stabilization, ViewSonic helps to brightness scenes that too dark. If you’re playing with someone who doesn’t have this feature, then you definitely have an edge against them.
The ViewSonic XG2402 also comes with full support for AMD FreeSync. This allows you to get a much smoother gaming experience as the refresh rates of the monitor and the graphics match. Though not a game-changer in any way, having it does help. AMD FreeSync on this display starts at 40Hz and goes higher as you demand.
The buttons to control the OSD settings can be found on the bottom right of the monitor. Using the OSD controls, you will be able to adjust the brightness, contrast, ECO mode, color temperature, sharpness, aspect ratio, and other features. You can also adjust the color temperature of the display and even choose from a list of already available options.
Since this is a gaming monitor, the blue light filtering feature does make a difference. This feature helps in reducing the emission of harmful blue light. We have six presets to choose from namely standard, web, game, text, mono, and movie. For reference, the mono mode offers the least blue light while standard mode lets the most blue light out.
ViewSonic XG2402 Review – Wrap up
The ViewSonic XG2402 is a solid gaming laptop that comes at an affordable rate. Despite the lack of an IPS panel, the monitor manages to present good visuals that are gamer-friendly. The refresh rate and response time help in achieving a ghosting-free gaming experience that you seldom find in other budget monitors. If you’re on a hunt for a budget-friendly gaming monitor, this is a good choice.
