Are you on the hunt for a feature-rich 4K monitor that would fit into your budget? We’ve all been there. There is not a lot of money to spend, but we still want those crisp 4K resolution on our display. In this LG 32UD59-B review, we’re going to discuss a monitor that gives us 4K resolution on a budget.
On paper, we get a nice display that has impressive hardware. This monitor is a good fit for gamers and other users too as it has something for everyone. The display is also a nice choice if you’re going to spend most of your time editing videos and photos. Is this display a good one? Is it worth your money and time? Let’s find that out in the full review below.
The LG 32UD59-B UHD monitor comes with a minimalistic design. The chassis has a nice matte black coat that would fit in your room without making a noise. The stealthy look fits the display nicely and will not steal any attention from your colorful RGB gaming rigs. Though the main material here is plastic, you don’t get the feeling of a cheap product on the first look.
The bezels surrounding the screen are pretty slim. These are not the slimmest ones you can find on the market, but for the price, what you’re getting is quite slim. This slim bezel setup helps in reducing distractions and also offers you a streamlined viewing experience when gaming and during media consumption.
Let’s talk about the stand. We have an aluminum stand that comes with a nice weight to it. You can easily tilt the monitor front and backward to a certain degree. You can also swivel the monitor left and right which is always nice to have. The monitor can also be pivoted into a vertical one. This way, you can use this display for graphic design and coding.
Another nice feature the stand has is height adjustment. You can adjust the height of the stand to suit your needs. If more than one person is going to be using the display, this will come in handy. Even if only one person is going to use the monitor, having height adjustment can prevent unappealing height adjustment techniques like a book or an external step below the display.
The monitor’s on-screen display can be accessed through a directional joystick under the display. This may not be the most elegant solution there is, but you get used to it, everything will just feel right.
Once you remove the stand, the monitor is quite portable. Without the stand, the device weighs around 16lbs and can be moved easily from one place to another. You also have the freedom to mount this 4K display on your wall as it comes with VESA compatibility.
The LG 32UD59-B 4K monitor comes with several connectivity options. You get a dual HDMI 2.0 port that comes in handy to connect this display to a gaming console or a gaming desktop. You also get a display port 1.2 which also serves the same purpose. Both ports are HDCP 2.2 complaint if you were wondering. There is also a 3.5mm audio jack you can use for headphones.
The monitor also has a couple of inbuilt speakers. The audio quality of these speakers is quite ok and nothing groundbreaking. If you’re going to use this as your gaming monitor, then this audio is not going to make the cut. Even for media consumption, the sound quality is lackluster. We strongly recommend getting a good external speaker setup for a better audio experience.
The LG 32UD59-B model is a 31.5″ monitor that comes with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. This is called UHD resolution and for this screen size, we get a pretty good pixel density as well. As a result, the image quality is sharp and you can see some crazy details in native resolution. The display has a refresh rate of only 60Hz which is not that great considering LG is advertising this one as a gaming monitor.
Is this an IPS panel? No, we have a VA panel and not an IPS one. This VA panel falls right in between an IPS and a TN panel. The viewing angles of the display are miles better than that of a TN panel which is one of the few advantages of a VA panel. In comparison, the VA panel is cheaper than an IPS panel and there are some shortcomings as well. For example, you’re not going to get the same stellar picture quality.
The monitor covers 95% of the DCI-P3 color gamut. It also covers 99% of the sRGB color gamut and that’s something for a 4K monitor in this price range. The delta value out of the box is not great. We get a value of 3.4 which is not impressive, to say the least. The good news is that we can adjust this to our liking and with a bit of experimentation, we found excellent results at a delta value of 0.9.
The LG 32UD59-B model comes with a maximum brightness of 300nits. Since you’ll be spending most of your time inside your room gaming, this max brightness should be more than enough. The monitor can also get quite dim which can be handy when you’re playing with the lights off.
The monitor comes with a contrast ratio of 3000:1. At best conditions, the display managed to reach a contrast ratio of 2560:1 which isn’t too shabby. As a result, you get deep blacks, bright whites, and also an excellent grayscale performance. This monitor is an excellent choice for gaming and media consumption, and this contrast ratio is a very good reason for it.
Do you observe any ghosting with the LG 32UD59-B? While the monitor is not completely void of ghosting, it does a fantastic job handling it. The response time of the display does a neat job in reducing the ghosting and motion blur to some extent. The overdrive tool is available to handle these situations, but if you don’t know what you’re doing, there is a good chance that you’re only going to make it worse.
The LG 32UD59-B model also comes with AMD FreeSync compatibility. The range is between 40Hz and 60Hz which is pretty good. For a 4K display, this range is quite nice and you should get a fluid gaming experience with a nice graphics card setup on your gaming desktop.
Gaming filters are available for gaming through the OSD. These filters are not overdone and some of them can catch your attention. Once you get the hang of things, you should try to calibrate the display to your needs rather than relying on a gaming filter. Having said that, if you don’t want any headaches, just stick with a preset filter.
LG 32UD59-B Review – Wrap Up
The LG 32UD59-B is a solid UHD monitor that comes with reliable performance and also a pocket-friendly price tag. For the price, the display does very well when it comes to gaming and media consumption. This display is also a good choice for graphic design and coding which makes it an all-round display. If you’re on the search for a nice 4K monitor that is good at gaming and everything else, then this LG 32UD59-B model is a solid choice.
