Gaming on a 4K monitor is a dream for many people on a budget. Luckily, many models on the market offer 4K resolution and also are available at an affordable price. In this LG 27UK650-W review, we take a look at one such gaming monitor. LG is no stranger to making gaming monitors, and this one follows suit.
The LG 27UK650-W comes with a lot of tricks up its sleeves. Being a UHD display, you can expect excellent colors and image quality from this monitor. This gaming display is mainly aimed at gamers who are looking for an affordable 4K gaming monitor. Is this gaming monitor from LG worth the price? Are there any better alternatives out there? Let’s find the answer to these questions and more in the full review below.
The first impression of the LG 27UK650-W model is nothing short of excellent. This is a high-end gaming monitor that comes with a beautiful design. When you take a look at this LG monitor, you know that this is a premium device. Most gaming monitors in this price range fall short when it comes to design and that’s where this one shines.
One of the best design features that grabs your attention is the size of the bezels surrounding the screen. These bezels are super-thin and add a nice, contemporary look to this monitor. The bottom bezel is a lot thicker as it hosts the logo and also the keys to navigate the OSD controls.
The aluminum stand we have here is a solid one. The stand has a nice weight to it and holds the monitor firmly without adding any wobble to it when pushed. The arc style at the bottom is a nice touch and makes the display look mode modern.
The stand also has a lot of features in it. You can swivel the gaming monitor to the right and left in smooth movements. The stand also gives you the freedom to tilt the screen forward and backward to a certain degree. If you’re a coder or a graphic designer, then the fact that this monitor can be pivoted into a vertical display should bring a smile to your face. To top it all, the monitor also comes with a height adjustment feature that is rare to find in most monitors these days.
If you want to mount this LG display on your wall, you can do that as this display is VESA compatible. You can do this by making use of a 100 x 100 VESA armature and fasteners. Overall, the design of this model is quite good and doesn’t make this gaming monitor look like a cheap budget gaming monitor.
Specs and General Performance
Let’s talk about the basic features of this gaming monitor. The LG 27UK650-W model is a 27″ LED-backlit gaming monitor that comes with a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. As the display comes with 4K resolution, the refresh rate is limited to 60Hz which is quite good for the price. The pixel density of the monitor is amazing and all you can see are crisp images and super sharp texts.
The panel we have here is an IPS panel. This is the best panel you can get for a monitor and it gives you an excellent all-round performance. The contrast ratio we have is 1000:1 which is quite decent for a budget gaming monitor. The blacks are deep and the whites are as bright as one would expect. The overall grayscale performance of this LG display is also very satisfactory.
The contrast ratio is maintained only when you’re at maximum brightness. When you bring the brightness to 50%, you can observe that the contrast ratio going down to 800:1. Since most of us will be operating the display with this brightness level, this is what you should expect. The monitor also comes with 99% support for sRGB color gamut which is decent.
The deltaE value out of the box is not that bad at around 1.8. The color accuracy is good quite and you also have the option to calibrate the display to arrive at the right color temperature. If you’re going to keep the same preset that comes with the display, you will get very unnatural colors as you keep increasing the brightness. The good news here is that all of the adjustable parameters are only a few inches away as you can mess with them using the OSD controls.
The LG 27UK650-W also comes with HDR10 compatibility which is nice. HDR10 gives you a richer picture and immerses you when it comes to media consumption as well as gaming. If you have HDR10 content on the screen, the display will automatically recognize it and support it to give you the best viewing experience there is. Applications like Netflix and games that have HDR10 content will give you the best experience.
The LG 27UK650-W comes with a refresh rate of 60Hz which is not something you see in gaming monitors. Most high-end displays come with 144Hz or 240Hz refresh rates for a better gaming experience. But 4K displays do not support higher refresh rates yet, and this one here is the best possible at this point.
The monitor comes with a response time fo 5ms. This might look like a bad number but for an IPS panel on a 4K display, this response time is excellent. Motion blur and ghosting are some common problems in gaming monitors. With a good response time, you can nullify these issues to a minimum. This response time does a pretty good in reducing motion blur and ghosting to almost zero which is awesome.
The HDR feature on the monitor is quite good. When the game supports it, it looks fantastic. If the game you’re playing is not HDR compatible, the monitor is smart enough to detect it and switches off HDR mode to save energy.
The LG monitor also comes with AMD FreeSync support. FreeSync is a great way to improve the overall fluidity of your gaming experience. It matches the frame rate of the GPU with that of the monitor and delivers a butter smooth gaming experience. The FreeSync range is usually between 40Hz and 60Hz.
You need to have an AMD graphics card to take full advantage of this feature. Nvidia’s G-Sync is not supported but that is not to say that you won’t make use of it. Some graphics cards run fine and handle G-Sync right while some don’t.
The LG 27UK650-W monitor comes with very few connectivity options. You get a display port 1.2 and 2 HDMI 2.0 ports for connectivity. These ports allow you to connect this 4K display to a gaming console or your gaming desktops. You also get an audio jack that should help you with your microphones and headphones.
LG 27UK650-W Review – Wrap Up
The LG 27UK650-W gaming monitor is a soild 4K display. It comes with excellent features and for the price, you shouldn’t be complaining. It is one of the few monitors in this price range that supports HDR10 that gives you rich viewing experience. Finding an alternative to this gaming monitor is a tough exercise as most of them will fall short in one way or another. If you’re looking for a UHD, HDR10 compatible gaming monitor at an affordable price, then this one here is a good choice.
