Most laptop HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm in the market come with a 15.6” display. Sometimes, as a consumer, you need something bigger. There are laptops with 17.3” screens on the market but which one is the right one for you? In this HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm review, we discuss this new 17.3” laptop that comes with a decent price tag.
This laptop is made for light users who need a bigger display. The specifications on this laptop are quite lightweight and will not suit those who need a lot of power to go through their daily tasks. If you are wondering if this laptop is worth your money, we recommend you to read this full review.
The design is nothing new in the Pavilion series. The laptop comes with a dark grey lead and a relatively lighter shade of silver for the rest of the body. And the hinge mechanism is smooth and gives a slightly different look to the device. The laptop makes a good first impression despite not having the best build.
The material used for construction here as plastic. Fortunately, the plastic used here is not cheap and doesn’t flex when the laptop is pushed to its limits. Thanks to the use of plastic, the laptop does not weigh a lot. For a 17.3” laptop, it weighs only around 6.15lbs which is not that heavy.
The laptop comes with a full-size keyboard that has a good layout with enough space between keys. The keys are made with a nice premium construction giving you a nice feel when typing. The keyboard can get a bit noisy if you type fast but there is nothing I can do about it.
One of the things that disappointed us was the lack of backlighting on the keyboard. With a backlit keyboard, you can work even in places where there is no light. Unfortunately, this laptop does not give you that freedom. The numeric keypad pad on the right allows you to work with numbers freely.
The touchpad on the laptop doesn’t come with any buttons and has one uniform single glass plate. It is responsive and can take your inputs without any lag. The touchpad supports all the gestures you get in Windows operating system and works as advertised.
Display and Audio
The display on this HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm laptop is a 17.3“ LED-backlit display that comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. For this screen size, this resolution is a bit low and you get a lower pixel density when compared to a 15.6” display. Having said that, the picture quality is fine and you get crisp pictures with sharp texts.
The display is also an anti-glare screen. This means you will get minimal reflections on the screen especially when you’re working in brightly lit areas. If you are going to use a glossy display, and you can easily see your face on this display when working in a bright room. This display prevents it and removes unnecessary distractions when you’re working.
One of the advantages of this widescreen display is that it gives you a lot of screen real estate. This screen is perfect to snap two windows side-by-side and work on them simultaneously. You can watch a video on YouTube on one window and do something else on the other. The possibilities are endless. The display is also very good for media consumption so watching your favorite series on Netflix or Hulu is going to be a much more enjoyable experience.
The speaker grill can be found above the keyboard. The quality of the speakers is just about average. It can get loud and easily fill a small-sized room without any problem. But as you increase the volume, you can notice a bit of distortion and sound which is common with laptops in this price range. If you are very nitpicky about sound quality, then you should go for dedicated speakers.
The HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm laptop is powered by AMD A10 9260P processor. This is an entry-level processor from AMD and comes with four physical courses. The processor clocks typically with a frequency of 2.4 GHz and can go up to a maximum frequency of 3.4 GHz. When it comes to handling your everyday needs, this processor can do a pretty good job.
This laptop is best suited for light users like Home users and students as this processor is perfect for browsing the web, media consumption, doing some research, working on office documents, and other everyday activities. You might be able to do some heavy lifting but there are going to be bottlenecks along the way. And
The memory department on the HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm laptop comes with 8GB RAM. This RAM is an adequate amount of memory for an entry-level laptop like this one. You will be able to do some heavy multitasking and can take your productivity to the next level. The laptop allows you to upgrade the RAM so you can add more memory whenever you need some (we don’t recommend it though).
Storage is one area where we were disappointed the most. The laptop comes with 1 TB 5400 RPM hard drive. Though this hard drive gives you a lot of space to play with, this is very slow storage and it will only get worse over time. Moving data from one place to another will be very slow and you will notice very slow app launching times as well.
For the price, we expected HP to include at least 128GB solid-state drive to compliment bigger hard drive storage. Unfortunately, that is not the case, and you are left with this slow hard drive which will test your patience.
Graphics, Battery Life, and Connectivity
The HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm laptop does not come with a dedicated graphics card. This laptop is not meant to be a gaming device and as a result, you only get an integrated AMD Radeon graphics card. This graphics card is excellent when it comes to meeting your everyday graphics requirements.
If you must game, you can do some light and even some mid-range gaming without any hiccups. But if you want to play the latest and the greatest games, this is not the right laptop for it and you may have to invest a few thousand dollars to get the best gaming laptop out there.
The battery life of the laptop is impressive. With regular use, you can easily get around 7 to 8 hours of battery life which is very good for the price. Even when using the speakers for media consumption, the laptop can still last for about 4 to 5 hours which is excellent value for money.
You get a lot of connectivity options in this HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm laptop. The laptop comes with a USB Type-C port which was a huge surprise for us considering the entry-level status of this laptop. This Type-C port transfers data at a very fast speed and will be the standard for the next few years. You also get a couple of USB 3.1 Type-A ports that are also excellent when it comes to data transfer and external connectivity.
The laptop comes with an HDMI port so that you can connect easily to an external display or a projector. There is also an optical drive for those DVD enthusiasts out there. You can make use of the ethernet port to connect to the internet for very high speeds. The laptop also comes with built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi making this laptop excellent in terms of wireless connectivity.
HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm Review – Wrap Up
The HP Pavilion 17-ar050wm laptop is an excellent value for the money. If you had to get the best laptop for the price, then we won’t have any hesitation in recommending this laptop. But this laptop is meant only for light users. You have to be a student or someone with light needs to make full use of this laptop. For anyone else, this laptop might not be a good fit
The laptop comes with all the essential specs to give you seamless everyday computing experience. The storage might be slow, but you’ll have fun with all the free space. The display is excellent for media consumption and can also help you get work done. If you are looking for an affordable 17.3” laptop that doesn’t disappoint you, then this one is a good fit.
