The HP Omen series has given us some solid gaming laptops in the recent past. HP has managed to compete with the like of serious players in the gaming niche like Alienware, MSI, and other ones. In this HP Omen 15-ax250wm review, we are going to take a look at this gaming machine that comes with slightly older specs but still relevant today.
The first thing we want to move out of the way is the fact that this one comes with a 7th gen Intel processor. If you’re buying a laptop today, you might doubt if you should go for an older processor. We think you won’t make a mistake by doing so (explained in detail below).
The laptop is mainly aimed at mid-range and even some high-end gamers. Another big advantage of this laptop is that it is very affordable for a gaming machine. How good is the performance of this gaming laptop? Is it worth your money? We answer these questions and more in the full review below.
The design of this HP Omen 15-ax250wm is fantastic and takes the cake in terms of looks. HP has gone with a unique and freaky design that is perfect for a gaming laptop. At some places, you can’t help but think of the Alienware laptop series from Dell but overall the look of the laptop is quite nice.
The laptop is made of high-quality plastic and comes with durability that can take a few physical hits without any issues. Another aspect of this laptop is the fact that you can’t travel with it a lot. This laptop weighs around 5.5lbs which is quite normal for a gaming laptop. Even though the laptop is not that heavy, it is not a slim laptop which makes it harder to carry it around.
The keyboard on this laptop is a very good one. It comes with an excellent layout and a dedicated number pad that will come in handy for a lot of users. The key travel on this laptop is fantastic and the overall typing experience is quite good. You will not miss your speed or accuracy with this keyboard which is cool.
Gaming on this keyboard is also a fantastic experience. The keys give you excellent feedback making your moves more prominent. The keyboard is also an RGB one that can be customized to the users’ style. There are multiple RGB zones that add more character to your laptop. The trackpad is a pretty standard one and works as advertised.
The display we have on this HP Omen 15-ax250wm is a 15.6” LED-backlit display that comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This is an IPS display which means we have a much better picture quality when compared with TN or VA panels. The display is a widescreen that is perfect for gaming and gives you nice viewing experience.
The contrast ratio of the display is also quite good, thanks to this IPS panel. The colors are punchy and you will love playing games on this display. The viewing angles of the display are also quite awesome making this an excellent choice for consuming media on your favorite platforms like Netflix and Amazon prime video.
The refresh rate of this display is 60Hz which is something you find on a normal laptop. The fact that they haven’t upgraded the refresh rate to at least 144Hz is a bit disappointing. But the overall performance of the display is still very good and you should be fine with it if you don’t nitpick.
There is no lack of processing power in this HP Omen 15-ax250wm laptop. We have a 7th generation Intel Core i7 processor on this laptop. This is a high-performance processor that comes with a base clock frequency of 2.8GHz and a maximum clock frequency of 3.8GHz. The processor comes with a smart cache memory of 6 MB which should come in handy.
When it comes to handling games and other heavy applications, this processor does a pretty good job. You will not face any hiccup when you’re trying to play your favorite games. This is also true when running some high-end applications or even when you’re dealing with your everyday tasks.
At the beginning of this review, we raised a Seven for using an older processor. This process there was one of the best processors at its time and it still does a pretty neat job at a much lesser price. If you take the performance for the price factor, then this processor might not be that bad for choice.
The memory situation on this laptop is more than adequate. We have 12 gigs of RAM that are of DDR4 type and it gives you enough memory to deal with all your games. But RAM comes with a clock speed of 2400 MHz which is the least fast out there but it still does a satisfactory job. You have an 8 GB stick and a 4 GB stick which means you can remove these are one of those and add more memory to this laptop whenever you want.
As far as multitasking is concerned, this is Ram supports it very well and gives you all the freedom you need to run several applications at the same time without bringing down the overall gaming experience.
This is one place where this HP Omen 15-ax250wm laptop falters. For storage, we have a 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA hard drive. This mechanical hard drive is the fastest of them all but is still a tortoise when compared with a solid-state drive. We are still scratching our heads on my HP didn’t include at least 128 GB SSD making this a hybrid storage solution.
The lack of a solid-state drive is visible as the laptop takes a lot of time to just boot up and to launch heavy applications. If you’re coming from a mechanical hard drive, then this may not be a huge problem for you. But, on the other hand, if you have used solid-state drives, then this laptop will be pure hell.
The graphics card we have on this HP Omen 15-ax250wm is an Nvidia GeForce GTX 1050 Ti. This is an upper mainstream graphics card that comes with a dedicated video RAM of 4 GB. Like the processor, this is also older hardware but it does well when it comes to gaming performance.
You will be able to run pretty much all mid-range games and a few graphically intensive games without any issues whatsoever. If you want to run the latest and the greatest games, then it won’t be such a bad idea to bring down the settings so that you can achieve a decent frame-rate. If you want to play all the games on ultra settings, then this laptop may not be the right choice.
Battery Life & Connectivity
Gaming laptops are not known for battery life and this one is no different. The HP Omen 15-ax250wm comes with a pretty bad battery life and it can last for a maximum of 2 to 2 1/2 hours when you’re gaming. If you’re doing something light, then you might be able to get around 4 to 5 hours of battery life which is still not that impressive.
There is a decent collection of ports on this HP gaming laptop. You get USB 3.0, USB 2.2, HDMI, ethernet, SD card slot, and an audio jack. These ports are more than enough for most users. But now we are slightly disappointed by the fact that HP hasn’t upgraded the design to include a USB type C port which is going to be the standard for laptops in the next few years.
The laptop also comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth built-in for better wireless connectivity.
HP Omen 15-ax250wm Review – Summary
Overall, the HP Omen 15-ax250wm laptop is a pretty good gaming laptop if you’re looking for an affordable one for mid-range and a bit of heavy gaming. If you are on a budget and if you want a serious gaming laptop, then this HP omen laptop can be a pretty good choice for your needs.
