Best Laptop For Nursing Students (Editor’s Choice) – ASUS ZenBook 13
The ASUS ZenBook 13 is our Editor’s Choice for the best Windows laptop for nursing students.
ASUS has been producing some amazing laptops over the last few years and the ASUS ZenBook 13 is the perfect example of it.
Right from the design, the ASUS ZenBook 13 is a champion laptop. It comes in at around 3 lbs making it one of the lightest laptops for nursing students. You can easily carry this laptop around without feeling anything extra in your backpack.
ASUS has also made design breakthroughs of this laptop by pushing this 13.3” laptop into the footprint of a 12“ laptop. This is done by reducing the size of the bezels and thereby decreasing the total footprint of the entire laptop. It also helps in reducing the weight of the laptop.
This allows one-handed use of the laptop and you can even take notes on this laptop while standing which could be handy for some.
Another major selling point for this ASUS ZenBook 13 model is its battery life. With regular use, the ASUS ZenBook 13 can last for at least 9 to 10 hours consistently. If your daily activities include taking notes, browsing the web, social media, and other simple tasks like streaming, then you can expect the laptop to achieve the above-mentioned numbers.
If you plan on running complex applications that are a bit resource-intensive, then expect the battery life of the laptop to come down a bit. Even then, you would have a comfortable battery life to play with.
For display, we have a 13.3″ one with full HD resolution. The ASUS ZenBook 13 model also comes with the option of having a QHD display but we don’t prefer it as we think it is overkill. Having said that, if you can afford it and if you would find it useful then you should probably go for it.
Coming back to the display in hand, this is one of the best full HD displays you will find on the market. ASUS nails it when it comes to colors and gives you vibrant colors with excellent contrast ratio, thanks to the IPS panel underneath. The pictures look beautiful and the text is super sharp making for an excellent web browsing experience.
The laptop also comes with a touchscreen which means you will get the complete Windows experience. The touchscreen supports multi-finger gestures which should come in handy if you’re familiar with it.
The keyboard on the laptop deserves a special mention. The keys are well laid out and come with excellent travel. When you type on this keyboard, you get a nice typing experience and it feels more like a mechanical keyboard. The keyboard is also backlit which makes it comfortable to use in dark scenarios.
The touchpad on the ASUS ZenBook 13 is a solid one and is a pleasure to use. There is absolutely no friction and your finger just glides through the surface when you’re making those Windows gestures.
The processor we have on the ASUS ZenBook 13 is an Intel Core i7 processor from the 10th generation. This is a low-voltage and a mid-range processor from Intel that is perfect for nursing students.
The i7 processor comes with a base clock speed of 1.1 GHz and it can go up to 4.7 GHz with the help of a turbo boost. The processor also has 12 MB of Smart cache memory which would come in handy when you’re working with office applications and other apps.
When it comes to handling everyday tasks, this processor blows it out of water. You can run almost any application on this laptop without facing any performance issues.
The memory department on the ASUS ZenBook 13 comes with 16 GB of DDR4 RAM. This memory is a bit of overkill for nursing students as they won’t be utilizing even half of it most of the time. But if you’re going to be doing a ton of research at the tens of tabs open on your browser, then you would be fine with this Ram.
What are the main reasons for the ASUS ZenBook 13 performance is the solid state drive. We have a 256 GB solid-state drive that comes with very good reading and writing speeds. This SSD is very fast when it comes to everyday performance and plays a big role in improving the opening times of applications.
The ASUS ZenBook 13 comes only with the integrated Intel UHD graphics card. This graphics card handles most of your graphics requirements without any issues. Unless you’re a gamer who likes to play high-end games, the lack of a dedicated graphics card shouldn’t bother you much.
There are quite a few connectivity options on the ASUS ZenBook 13. You get a USB type C port and a USB 3.0 point that are great for high-speed data transfer. There is also an HDMI port which should come in handy when you’re trying to connect your laptop to a high-end display.
Overall, the ASUS ZenBook 13 is an excellent laptop for nursing students. It gives you all the power you need without costing you an arm or leg. The battery life is excellent and the display is to die for. Without a doubt, then this ZenBook 13 is easily one of the best laptops for Nursing school.
Best Mac For Nursing School – MacBook Air
If you’re a fan of Apple and if you want a Mac for nursing school, then the best choice for you is the MacBook Air.
MacBook Air is Apple’s most portable and compact laptop. With a 13.3″ display, the MacBook Air weighs 2.7 lbs which is super light and easy to carry around. In the MacBook Air may not be sharing the Dell XPS laptop’s smaller footprint, but you still get probably the lightest laptop on the list.
The keyboard on the MacBook Air is much improved when compared with its predecessors. Apple went back to the scissor mechanism and has dropped the butterfly mechanism in the former’s favor. The scissor mechanism has made typing much easier and has regained People’s trust in Apple’s keyboard.
The trackpad on the MacBook Air is probably the best on any laptop. The size of the trackpad is much larger than on your regular laptop. This gives the user more surface to play with and you can comfortably make all the macOS gestures without any issues.
MacBook Air shines when it comes to battery life. You can easily get around 10 hours of battery life with regular use. Even if you are going to do some complex stuff, expect the MacBook Air to last for at least 5 to 6 hours which is still very good for Apple’s entry-level laptop.
The MacBook Air’s display is one of its best features. We have a 13.3-inch display with retina resolution which puts more than 4 million pixels on the screen. This gives us an excellent pixel density and as a result, you get super vibrant and crisp pictures. If you plan on doing a lot of web-based research, then you will love reading on this laptop, thanks to the sharp text you will witness.
The display is also excellent to watch your favorite content. You can stream Netflix or prime video on this laptop without any issues and the display also supports HDR content which is quite rare and 13.3-inch laptops. Thanks to the IPS panel, you get amazing viewing angles that allow you to see the content from any corner of the room without losing any color.
The speakers on the MacBook Air are simply brilliant. Laptops do not come with excellent speakers and usually, people prefer getting external speakers to get a good sound out of them. The MacBook Air speakers are loud and at the same time give quality sound which is simply superb.
The speakers can easily fill a medium-sized room and you can even run a small party with the sound quality that is coming out of this laptop. Even at the highest volume, you do not find any distortion which is not something we can say for most laptops.
The MacBook Air is powered by an Intel Core i3 processor which comes the base frequency of 1.1 GHz. The processor can clock higher with the help of a turbo boost when you need a bit more power. Though this processor might belong to an older generation, it does an excellent job when it comes to handling your everyday activities.
Being an i3 processor, this processor does not put any stress on your battery. It is just the right amount of power you need for nursing school and should even elongate your battery life in most scenarios.
There are 8 GB of RAM in the memory department and they help inefficient multitasking. If we are going to run complex applications or refund applications with big data files, then this memory will come in handy. For most nursing students, this is more than enough memory to carry on with their everyday work.
There is a 256 GB solid-state drive for storage in the MacBook Air. The solid state drive is very fast and can even move gigabytes of data in a snap. The SSD loads the operating system within a few seconds and the same is true when it comes to the opening times of applications.
You will not find a dedicated graphics card in the MacBook Air and that is perfectly fine. Most nursing students will not need a dedicated graphics card to carry on with their everyday needs. If you’re one of those rare students who absolutely need a dedicated graphics card, then you can make use of any GPU to meet your requirements.
The only gripe we have with the MacBook Air is in the connectivity department. the laptop comes with only a couple of USB type C port and no other options. This is Apple’s push with USB C but it is highly inconvenient for those who haven’t moved to the new standard.
If you have devices that don’t support USB type C port, then you have to buy adapters that are going to make your setup more clunky. One would expect Apple to at least include adapters in the short term so that their users don’t have to buy it separately, but if you know Apple you know that’s not gonna happen.
Overall, the MacBook Air is the best Apple laptop for nursing students. It is affordable, comes with excellent performance, and has an amazing display which gives you a fantastic multimedia experience along with the speakers.

What To Look For In The Best Laptop For Nursing Students?
We agree that not all the laptops mentioned above will be a good choice for all aspiring nurses.
If you want to go with a different laptop, then you should. But we still want to help which is why we are giving you a good, easy-to-follow guide that you can assist you to find the right laptop for your nursing school.
This will help you to save money and know what you’re getting from the laptop and also what to expect.
One of the most important aspects when getting a laptop for Nursing school is the operating system you’re going to work on for the next few years.
Different nursing schools have different requirements and they may or may not be okay with a particular operating system of your choice. So make sure you find which is the operating system of choice for the school so that you can get the right one.
If there are no enforced operating systems from the nursing school, then you can go with an OS of your choice.
In this case, make sure that the operating system of your choice is compatible with all the software is you will be using during the course of your studies.
For example, some of the mainstream software you will be using our Microsoft Office suite, Adobe reader, Flash, or similar software. These mainstream software ran fine on both Windows and Mac OS which are currently the most used mainstream operating systems.
Some of the nursing school oriented apps like Typhoon clinical logs, Lexicomp, and Epocrates are also available on both the operating systems. The software is used by schools may vary to make sure that the software is compatible with the operating system you are going with.
In our opinion, it is safer to go with a Windows operating system as most applications will work fine on windows. But if your nursing school prefers macOS, then it is better to go with that even if your preferences windows as you can install Windows via Boot Camp even on a Mac.
Your budget will most likely decide the kind of laptop you’re going for.
If you are short on money, then you have to settle for a laptop that may not have the best of features.
However, even budget laptops these days are very good and can help you with notes taking and running applications that are related to Nursing.
If the budget is not a problem for you, then we recommend going with a laptop that will give you a seamless laptop experience in school. Most premium laptops will cost around a thousand dollars or more depending on what bells and whistles you’re looking for.
If you’re looking for some high-end features like a touchscreen or a convertible laptop, it is going to cost you extra. You may want additional accessories like headphones with built-in microphones and webcam, and this is also going to add to your total expense.
We would recommend getting a mid-range laptop that is not too low on hardware. Most mid-range laptops offer very good user experience and you won’t have a problem with it during your time at nursing school.
Portability is another important factor for nursing students as you will be on the move most of the time.
To have the best portability, you need a laptop that weighs around 3 pounds. Most 13.3 inch laptops will fall in this week category and if you don’t have a problem with the screen size, then you should probably go for it.
The catch here is that most laptops in that size category will have a premium price tag attached to them. If you don’t have the budget for it, then you can settle for a 15.6-inch laptop which might weigh a bit more.
Most 15.6 inch laptops will be around £4.5 to 5 pounds. This is not ideal but if you can’t afford a premium laptop, then this laptop size is probably your next best choice.
If you absolutely want a 13.3-inch laptop, then a Chromebook would be a very good choice. Chrome OS may not be nursing school-friendly, but you might be able to manage with all the web applications and regular applications.
If you want to get maximum portability, then you can achieve it by getting yourself a tablet. Our recommended tablet is the iPad Pro and that weighs only around 1.7 lbs which is super light and give you maximum portability. If you can run all your software on the iPad without any issues, then there shouldn’t be any problem with using one.
As a nursing student, you’re going to be spending a lot of time in front of the computer taking notes, working on papers, and much more.
Having a quality screen will make your life better. When we talk about the display, there are a few factors you need to make sure your laptop needs.
The first factor is the size of your display. To get the maximum portability, we recommend going with a 13.3-inch display. This display is neither too small nor to pick and will give you the perfect laptop for taking notes and for working on the move.
A 15.6-inch laptop can be a bit too big but if you don’t have the budget for a 13.3-inch laptop or if you want a big size display, then you can go with this one.
The second thing to note is the resolution of your display.
As a minimum, you need a laptop with a resolution of 1080p. This is full HD resolution and it gives you clear images and sharp text which is absolutely necessary for students.
If you can afford it, we even recommend going for a QHD display as you have more pixels on the screen and you’ll be able to work with a much better display. But this is not a necessity and is definitely not a deal-breaker.
If you don’t have the budget to get yourself a full HD display, then we recommend going for a 1440 x 900 pixels resolution display. This is not full HD but at the same time, this is a much better option than your regular HD displays.
The reason why we don’t prefer HD displays is because they are a very low resolution for this day and age. You won’t get the same clarity you get in a higher-end display like a 1080p or a QHD display.
Another important thing to check is if your display has an IPS panel underneath it. Having an IPS panel makes a world of difference when compared to a TN panel or a VA panel.
The IPS panel will give you excellent pictures and vibrant colors. The contrast ratio of the display will be much better with an IPS panel and you will also be presented with extraordinary viewing angles.
And if you are going to work in a brightly lit atmosphere. Then it would be wise to get an anti-reflective display. This would reduce the amount of reflection you see on the screen which is quite distracting.
Having a touchscreen on your laptop is mostly personal preference. I don’t see any benefit on having a touchscreen on a laptop which is not a convertible. It just makes your screen viable and you don’t get much done which is a real productivity killer.
As a nursing student, you will be very disappointed if your laptop dies at a really bad time. This is why it is important to get a laptop with good battery life You don’t have to worry about it and concentrate on things that matter.
Ideally, we would like a laptop with all-day battery life. This means you won’t have to recharge your laptop in the middle of the day to keep working on it. Ring School might have charging points but we are not sure if they are going to be free when you need it the most.
If you can’t afford a laptop with all-day battery life, then make sure the laptop you’re going for, gives you at least six hours of battery life. This way, you can find some time to go and recharge your laptop before it completely dies on you.
If you are stuck on a budget and if you can’t get a laptop with good battery life, then we recommend getting a cheap power bank as a reliable backup power source. This way you can recharge your laptop with a power bank and you don’t have to go hunting for charging ports that are free to use.
As a nursing student, you are not going to need a lot of processing power.
You can go with an Intel Core i3 or an i5 processor which will give you enough power to handle your everyday work. These processes can run all the applications you need and you won’t go through any performance issues.
Avoid going with entry-level processes like Pentium, Celeron, and Atom processors from Intel as they are very weak when it comes to handling your requirements and will give you a huge bottleneck to work with.
You can also avoid going with Intel core i7 processors as they are a bit of overkill. They bring more power to the table and as a result, they might end up using more battery resulting in mediocre battery life.
If you want to save some money on the processor, then we recommend going with AMD as they are much cheaper than Intel processors. Just find the right equivalent processor and make sure they don’t have thermal issues attached to them.
How much memory does a nursing student need?
If you’re not going to do anything heavy, then you may be able to manage with just 4 GB of RAM in your laptop. This will be sufficient for handling everyday needs and for running simple applications like office apps and browsers.
If you are going to run some heavy applications or use big office files, then Will need at least 8 GB of RAM in your laptop. This love will also give you more freedom to run more tabs on your browser without refreshing too soon.
Any memory more than this is overkill for a nursing student. also, make sure that you are not settling for anything less than 4 GB of memory. In our opinion, if you have the money, then go for 8 GB of RAM that is of DDR4 type for its faster clock speed.
Do not compromise when it comes to storage on your laptop. You don’t need a lot of storage as a nursing student, but you need a fast one.
Always get a solid-state drive for storage even if it is just 128 GB of space. SSDs are costlier than hard drive disks but they make up for it with performance.
Solid-state drives are extremely fast when it comes to reading and writing speeds and will change the way you use your laptop if you haven’t used one before. It boots up the operating system in a flash and You will almost forget what it’s like to have a lag on your system.
Having a good keyboard is paramount for nursing students as you will be typing a lot on your laptop.
Whether it is working on a paper or if you’re simply taking notes, you need a good laptop that does not affect your speed or your accuracy. Make sure that the laptop comes with a good keyboard layout and well-spaced keys.
Do not go for a laptop that comes with Moshi key is that don’t give you enough feedback. Also, avoid loud keyboards as you may not be able to use them freely in places like libraries or public places like cafes.
If you’re going with a Windows laptop, then make sure that the type and comes with full support for Windows gestures. Ensure that the surface is smooth and will not provide you friction when you are using it.
You don’t need a dedicated graphics card for Nursing school.
If your laptop does not come with a dedicated GPU, you won’t have any problem with it when it comes to your everyday use. Even with the integrated graphics card, you will be able to handle most of your graphic requirements without any issues.
If you are a gay man, then you need a laptop with a dedicated graphics card because the integrated graphics card might not fair well when it comes to some graphically intensive games.
Having several connectivity options on your laptop is extremely important.
Make sure that your laptop comes with all the essential ports you need on a daily basis. The laptop should come with at least one USB type C port and one USB 3.0 port.
If you are going to connect your laptop with external devices like a projector, then the laptop should Have an HDMI port. We are planning to connect your laptop to a much bigger display, then it will be better off with a display port or a mini display port.
If you’re going to take online classes, then make sure that the laptop comes with a built-in Wi-Fi so that you can stream your classes at good space without any buffering.
What About A Tablet?
If your nursing school allows tablets, then maybe it is not a bad option to consider one.
Choosing a tablet or laptop does give you a few advantages.
A tablet is a lot more portable than a laptop. Taking notes on a tablet is a lot easier than on a laptop as you can take handwritten notes which add a personal touch.
Tablets also last a lot longer than laptops when it comes to battery life. There is a good chance that you can use a tablet straight for two days if you are going with a good one.
Make sure that the software you need for your nursing school is compatible with the tablet of your choice. It is also important to see if you can take your online exams on your tablet itself and if that’s allowed in your school.
That brings this mammoth post to its end.
Finding the right laptop for your nursing studies is no easy feat and we hope we played a little part in making the decision easier for you.
