Our recommendation would be to go for a laptop that has good specs but doesn’t cost a lot. Somewhere around $1600 would get you a fantastic device and anything more than that for college would be overkill, in our opinion.
The operating system on your laptop should be the one you are very familiar with. Whether you are going with Windows or macOS or Linux, you should use the operating system that you are comfortable with the most.
Modern-day applications are compatible with pretty much any operating systems out there. Even if you can’t use that very application, there will be alternatives and they can give you everything you need.
If your college forces you to use a particular application, then it might be worth considering the operating system on your laptop. Generally, Windows is the most compatible operating system when it comes to supporting mechanical engineering applications. So if you are a Mac user, you can still get a MacBook and install Windows via Boot Camp to run applications that are only compatible with the Windows operating system.
