What To Look For In The Best Laptop For MATLAB?

Before we take a look at all the stuff you should be aware of before getting your next laptop, let’s dive into the minimum requirements for running MATLAB.

  • Operating System – Windows 7, 10, Server 2016 and Server 2019, macOS 10.12 and above, Ubuntu 14.04 and above, RED Har 6.7 and above, SUSE desktop 12 and above
  • Processor – Any processor that has 4 cores and above
  • Memory – 8GB LPDDR3 RAM or better
  • Storage – 5 to 8GB of free space, preferably a solid-state drive
  • Graphics – A GPU with 1GB dedicated memory, can be an integrated or a dedicated GPU. Needs OpenGL 3.3 support.

From what we can see, the requirements are that intimidating. But depending on what you want to do, these requirements will change drastically.

Now, let’s take a look at the criteria for finding the best laptop for running MATLAB.

Processor

Finding the right processor depends on what you want to do.

If you plan on doing something light and simple, you might get away with an i3 processor from Intel or a similar one from AMD. Yes, that right. An i3 processor that belongs to the 7th generation or later can do a good job when it comes to handling simple stuff with MATLAB.

Say, you have a good amount of work cut out for you, then an i3 chip is not going to be enough. In this case, you are going to need an Intel Core i5 or an i7 processor. Both these chips are made for heavy processing and do well with MATLAB.

When it comes to the number of cores, make sure you get the one with at least 4 physical cores. Having a quad-core processor will give you a lot of power, and you will get things done quickly. If you need more power, then you should go with an Intel Core i7 processor.

What about clock speed?

If you are going on something complex like neural networks or machine learning, then you’re going to need at least 16GB of RAM. Make sure the RAM is of DDR4 type and has a good clock speed of 2400MHz.

32 gigs of RAM might be overkill for most people unless you need it.

Though LPDDR3 RAM is okay with the minimum requirements, we would recommend against it as you can get much better clock speeds and bandwidth with a DDR4 RAM.

Even on a tight budget, we recommend getting a smaller capacity SSD, like a 128GB one, and complement it with an HDD with more storage capacity. You can also go with an SSHD which does this by default.

Another option for high-speed storage is RAID, but that is not possible in a portable device like a laptop.

Absolutely not.

You can work fine with an integrated graphics card. Just make sure that the GPU comes with a dedicated memory of 1GB, and comes with support for OpenGL 3.3 or later.

Most modern integrated GPUs are very good and have improved a lot over the years. The latest Intel UHD graphics cards do give you excellent performance if gaming is not on your cards.

The display also needs to have a good brightness. A display with a maximum brightness of 300 nits is good if you’re going to predominantly indoors. If you’re planning work on wheels, then we recommend a maximum brightness of 400 nits or more.
