Best Laptop For Elementary School Students (Editor’s Choice) – Apple MacBook Air
Apple MacBook Air is our Editor’s choice for the best laptop for elementary students.
We chose the Apple MacBook Air for several reasons.
The most compelling reason is the fact that this MacBook Air is perfect for a student to carry around without feeling any burden.
The design of the MacBook Air paves way for an excellent laptop in such a small footprint. The laptop weighs around 2.75 lbs and can easily slide into any kid’s backpack without any issues whatsoever.
Let’s talk a bit about the design of the MacBook Air. Apple has made a premium device and you will know that when you take a look at this laptop. The sleek finish gives this laptop a premium feel which you will recognize when you lift this laptop.
The hinges on this laptop or super smooth allowing even small children to lift the laptop lead with a single hand. Not many laptops out there give you the same user experience.
Battery life is one of the best features of the MacBook Air. When you use the laptop for simple activities like browsing the web, working on small documents, doing a little bit of social media and so on, the laptop will easily last for about 10 to 14 hours which is crazy good.
Even if you do some heavy work on the MacBook Air, the laptop will stay alive for at least 6 to 8 hours which is still impressive.
One of the best things about the laptop is its display. We have a 13.3-inch display that comes with retina resolution. This is Apple’s fancy term for a QHD display. But we do have to give it to Apple. For designing a display that is richly color accurate and is perfect for media consumption.
The screen is well suited for watching movies and TV shows, browsing the web, reading newspapers and magazines, and also for office work as well. Since we are talking about elementary school students, they will not have a problem doing school work on this display.
Let’s talk about the processing power of this laptop.
The MacBook Air comes with an Intel core i5 processor. This is a dual-core processor and comes with a base frequency of 1.6 GHz and a maximum clock speed of 3.7 GHz.
This is a mid-range processor and when it comes to an elementary school student’s need, this processor does a pretty good job. You will be able to run any application without any issues whatsoever.
The MacBook Air comes with eight gigs of DDR4 memory. This is a lot of memory for a school student but we are not going to complain as this is the minimum Apple is going to give you on its laptop. The memory is excellent for multitasking and allows you to run multiple apps simultaneously without bringing down the performance of the system.
The Storage in the MacBook Air is flexible. You can get any amount of storage depending on your needs which is a nice thing to have. We would recommend getting the minimum storage for elementary school students which is 128GB.
Apple only provides SSDs as storage options for the MacBook Air. This means you are going to get super-fast storage that will enhance the performance of the laptop in a lot of ways. It will boot the operating system super quick and you will also notice blazingly fast opening times for applications.
The MacBook Air comes only with an integrated graphics card. Elementary school students do not require a high end dedicated graphics card for that regular use. Even if your child likes to play games, most of the games that small children play will be supported well by the integrated solution itself.
Connectivity is one area where we were a little disappointed. The laptop comes with a couple of USB type C ports which are versatile. You can use the same port to charge your laptop, the transfer data, and also for external connectivity. But the laptop fails to support devices that connect with other ports. This means you will have to get adapters to make your existing devices work which is a hassle in our opinion.
Overall, the MacBook Air is a solid laptop for elementary students. It comes with excellent hardware, portability, battery life, and so many other useful features, making it the best laptop for elementary school students who prefer the Mac operating system.

Another thing that caught our attention is the battery life this laptop provides. With light usage, we should be able to squeeze out at least 14 hours of battery life which is unheard of when it comes to high-performance laptops. Even with heavy usage, the laptop should last for at least 5 to 8 hours which is pretty good.
This laptop is well designed to make it useful for students. The keyboard can be easily removed from the laptop making it a tablet that can be used with a touch interface.
The tablet mode is excellent for taking notes and for making illustrations. If you have a creative child in your home, this tablet mode will come in very handy and unleash your child’s creativity.
The display on this laptop is a 12.3-inch one and has PixelSense resolution. This resolution is around 3200 x 1800 pixels which puts a lot of pixels and a small screen increasing its pixel density by a good deal.

The display is also great for media consumption during travel. The viewing angles make this device a good one for presenting to teachers and fellow students. The speakers on this device are very loud but clear at the same time.
The keyboard on this laptop is not like other keyboards. The touch and feel of this keyboard are very different and it comes with fabric-like texture. The typing experience, however, is very good and you should get used to it pretty quickly. The trackpad is decent and gets the job done.
The surface pro 7 is powered by an Intel Core i5 processor. This i5 processor is from the 10th generation of Intel chips and is one of the powerful processors at the moment. The processor comes with four cores and has a maximum clock speed in upwards of 4.0 GHz.
When it comes to handling your everyday activities, this processor does a fabulous job. Even if you want to work on some heavy applications, this processor can easily get through that without any hiccups.
The memory department in this laptop comes with an 8GB DDR4 type RAM. Like we mentioned already, this RAM is a bit too much for elementary school students. Having said that, the students will be able to multitask their heart out without worrying about any lag in the system.
For storage, the surface pro 7 comes with 256 gigs of solid state drive storage. The SSD here is one of the fastest you will ever find on a laptop and comes with excellent reading and writing speeds. If you’re coming from a mechanical hard drive, you will note significant differences in the overall performance of the operating system.
Like the MacBook Air, the surface pro seven also comes with an integrated graphics card. The Intel UHD graphics card is the graphics card here and it does well when it comes to handing your everyday graphics requirements.
Even if you want to play some between games, this integrated Intel graphics card can take care of it without any issues. If you are serious about gaming, and if you want to play AAA games, then maybe you are not looking at the right laptop.
Overall the Microsoft surface pro 7 is an excellent device and is perfect for elementary school students as it brings portability and power to the same device. It does come with an expensive price tag but if you ask us, the performance justifies the price.

What To Look For in the Best Laptops for Elementary Students?
If you’re not happy with the recommendations mentioned above, then here are some factors you should take into account before you take your car out for your next laptop purchase.
How old is your child?
If you have a very young child, ask yourself if your child really needs a laptop. We put this question forward because children are not mature and can cause serious damage is expensive gadgets like laptops.
If your child does not have the maturity or the discipline to take care of a laptop, then you probably shouldn’t get him or her a laptop.
But if your kid has practice using computers at school, then maybe getting I laptop is not a bad idea. Another way to check if your child is ready for a laptop is to see how good they are with your smartphone.
If your child handles your smartphone well without causing any damage, then they should be okay with the laptop. However, you should make sure that there is some sort of adult supervision when your child is using that laptop.
School’s Laptop Policy
Do find out what the school is thinking about getting your child a laptop.
Some schools provide children with computers at school so that they can use them during their allotted hours. Whereas some schools give children laptops or iPads so that they can use them both at school and at home.
If the school provides your child with a laptop, then there is no need for you to get one yourself.
Some schools discourage parents from getting the children a laptop at a very young age to stop them from getting addicted to computers. If the school has such a policy in place, then it is up to you to take a decision in this regard.
Kids do not require a lot of processing power when it comes to laptops.
It is important to get a decent processor so that the laptop can be used at least for the next few years. Our recommendation is to get at least an Intel Core i3 processor so that there is enough power for the child to do both work and a bit of gaming in their leisure time.
If your child has to work on some processor-intensive projects, then you can get them a laptop that comes with an Intel Core i5 or an i7 processor, though the latter is definitely overkill.
When it comes to the number of cores, you should be fine with the laptop that has two cores.
Clocking speed is no big deal but make sure that the laptop comes with at least a minimum clock speed of 1.8 GHz. Turbo speed functionality is a good one to have but it is not necessary.
How much memory does your child’s laptop need? For elementary school students, we recommend going with at least four gigs of DDR4 type memory. 8GB memory is also pretty good, but we feel like a child doesn’t need that much memory.
Storage is not a big problem when we are dealing with kids.
For kids, a hard drive disc should be perfectly okay for their use. If you need more space you can go for a 512 GB hard drive or a one TB hard drive.
We do recommend solid-state drives for most people but since we are dealing with kids it may or may not be necessary. If you want your kid to have a snappy computing experience, then you should opt for solid-state drives as opposed to hard drive discs.
When opting for solid-state drives, getting 128GB SSD will be more than enough for an elementary school kid. Since SSDs are more expensive, you shouldn’t spend a lot of money here and try to save as much as possible.
If your child is interested in playing games that are heavy in graphics, then you need a laptop that comes with a dedicated graphics card. Getting a mid-range Nvidia or AMD Radeon graphics card would be a good idea of playing games. Graphics cards are very expensive so be sure to not spend a ton of money here.
If your child is not interested in playing games, then you should be fine with the integrated graphics solution that comes with the laptop. Most recent laptops come With a decent inbuilt graphics card which should be fine even for playing some good-looking games.
If you are getting a laptop only to focus on schoolwork, then you don’t have to worry about this graphics card section at all.
You need to get a laptop that comes with excellent battery life.
A laptop that gives you all-day battery life is preferred as your child will not have to deal with charging the laptop midday.
It is better to not let your child deal with adapters and charges at a very young age as it in walls a certain amount of risk. So the best way is to charge the laptop yourself and give it to your child without the charger to school.
If your kid is not going to take the laptop to school, then battery life is not a big deal as you can help your child To charge your laptop whenever required.
We are talking about elementary school children here and you don’t want to give them a laptop that is too heavy for them to carry around.
At best, go for Ultrabooks that 13.3 inches in size and are easy to carry around. Most of our recommendations are very portable and weigh a lot less than other models on the market.
If your child will not be taking his or her laptop to school, then you are fine to go With a 15.6-inch laptop. Portability is not an issue year since the laptop will be used only at home.
Spending a lot of money for your kid’s laptop is not the smartest move you can make.
Depending upon the age of your child, you can get them a laptop that suits them without wasting any money.
If you have a really small child, then get a laptop that costs around $400 at best.
If you have a child who will graduate elementary school in a year or two, then get a laptop that costs around $700. This laptop will give your child more Processing power and he or she will be able to do more with their laptops.
We know parents only want the best for the kids. But getting an expensive laptop for a young kid is not a great idea when you look from the right angle. After a few years, you have to upgrade your child’s laptop which means this is going to be a recurring expense once every few years. So be sure to not spend too much money that will make you regret your decision later.
If the school does not have a specific operating system in mind, we are free to go with the laptop of your choice.
If the school I want your child to be familiar with the Windows operating system, then it is only fair that you get a laptop with windows in it.
Most schools these days provide their students with an iPad. In this case, you can also get them a Mac so that they will get used to the ecosystem.
Chromebooks are also pretty fashionable and are perfect for students in several ways.
That brings this mammoth post to its end.
