What To Look For In The Best Laptop For DJing?
The first thing you would do when trying to find a laptop for DJing is to see the minimum requirements for running the software of your choice.
Though this is not a bad place to start, oftentimes, those requirements are not that helpful. Once you read them, you can be sure that even a dinosaur of a laptop can run your application.
But in reality, that is far from the truth. You don’t need a laptop that can open the application. You need a laptop that can run the DJ software smoothly with consistent reliability.
In the following sections, we have discussed several aspects you should take into account to get a reliable laptop for DJing.
The design of the laptop is something that is often overlooked by people.
Manufacturers seldom pay attention to good design. They usually pack the laptop with awesome hardware and will put it in front of a crowd who will gobble them up thinking about the great performance and delivers.
But as a DJ, you not only need a laptop that is powerful and reliable, but also something that looks beautiful with excellent aesthetics.
Make sure you get a laptop that has a clean design and doesn’t look like a bulky gaming laptop. If you have seen an Alienware laptop, you would know what we are talking about. while there is nothing wrong with picking one like that, you are usually better off with something sleek and stylish.
If you’re someone who values portability, then go for a laptop that doesn’t add a lot of weight to your existing DJ kit.
If you want the absolute best portability, then the right thing is to go for a 13.3-inch ultrabook. These Ultrabooks are very light, usually around 3 lbs, and our super easy to carry around. They also won’t take up a lot of space on your desk which is handy.
Very rarely you will find a laptop that has a 15.6-inch screen and is also portable. Luckily we have mentioned a couple of laptops like that in our list above. The advantage with a bigger screen is that we will be able to see things clearly even when the environment is going batshit crazy.
Make sure that the laptop comes with a good cooling system. This is very important and if you’re going for a slim laptop that has a high-end processor in it. When the processor goes crazy, it is going to generate a lot of heat inside the laptop. To avoid unnecessary breakdowns, it is better to check if your laptop comes with a good cooling system.
Most gaming laptops will have an excellent cooling system in place in order to maintain a good optimum temperature. This way even if your processor gets hot, the fans will blow the hot air out of your laptop and keep your gaming marathon is going. You will have to find a laptop that does this when you are DJing.
Upgradability is another important factor. When you pick a laptop, it should give you the choice to upgrade the internals when needed in the future. Do you cannot upgrade the processor and graphics card, you will still be able to upgrade the RAM and storage.
These two components will always have their needs increasing over time. Your storage needs will keep on building which means you will need more storage a few years after now. As applications growing complexity, you will also be needing a lot more memory to handle them seamlessly which is why you will need more ram later in the future.
When looking for storage upgrades, make sure that the laptop comes with a free M.2 slot so that you can install more storage in the form of a solid-state drive. Most M.2 slots will only give you the option to add only SATA III SSDs. These are much slower when compared to the fastest SSDs out there. Make sure you can add PCIe NVMe based SSDs later.
When it comes to RAM, most laptops will have maximum RAM that can be supported. For DJs, 16GB of RAM is a pretty good place to be at. If you are short on money and if you’re going to start your Dj career with 8GB of RAM, then you should be able to upgrade this memory to 16GB in a few years.
Ensure that you are dealing with DDR4 RAM as it is the latest and it comes with a lot more speed than the DDR3 model. The former is a bit more expensive but it offers quite a performance which justifies the cost.
Having a good processor in place is essential for a DJ’s laptop.
There are a ton of processors out there from both Intel and AMD but not all of them will be a good fit for your laptop.
There are several factors to consider when picking a laptop processor namely the number of cores, the clock speed, and also the generation of your processor.
Let’s talk about the number of cores you need.
As a minimum, you will be fine with two physical cores on your processor if you are a complete beginner. You will not be working with a lot of tracks on your DJ software which means you won’t need that much power from the CPU.
If you are a more experienced DJ, then you are going to need a minimum of at least four physical cores and eight threads on your processor. Most Intel core i5 and i7 processors will have this configuration.
Having this money cores on your processor will allow you to run your Dj application freely without any hiccups. In layman’s terms, each core can behave like a mini CPU inside your processor. So if you have multiple things running at once, you can be assured that each core is taking care of each one of them thereby optimizing the overall performance of your Dj software.
How much clock speed is good enough?
As a minimum, we recommend going with a clock speed of at least 1.50GHz. Most DJ software will run fine with this clock speed.
You need to make sure that this 1.50GHz is only the base frequency of your processor and not the maximum.
The processor should also be able to shoot it’s clocking frequency to at least 4.0GHz with the help of the Turbo boost functionality. This way, your processor can give you more power whenever you need some.
Intel vs. AMD
Both brands have been producing some amazing processors.
If you want to go to the safe route, then you can choose an Intel Core i5 or an i7 processor. Intel is a solid brand and pretty much all the DJ software has compatibility with Intel processors. You cannot go wrong here.
On the other hand, going with an AMD processor would save you a considerable amount of money which you could use to get a better hard drive or more memory for your laptop. AMD processors are also very good and have improved by leaps and bounds in the last couple of years.
If you take a look at the minimum requirements, most software will say that a laptop with 4 GB of RAM is good enough.
In our opinion, this is the most misleading thing you can read on the internet. When manufacturers say that 4 GB is enough they mean that 4 GB of RAM should be allocated for the software itself.
But with the laptop that has four gigs of memory, You will lose 2GB of RAM to the operating system itself. With the remaining 2GB, you are going to have a hard time running the application smoothly.
This is exactly why we recommend a minimum of 8GB of RAM if you are into DJing. This memory is perfect for handling applications like Serato DJ and Ableton.
If you’re going to do something crazy with tons of traction other plug-ins, then we recommend going for at least 16 GB of RAM. It might look like this historical, but it will come in handy if you’re planning something big.
In any case, we do not think that a DJ, whether a beginner or professional, will need 32GB of RAM or more. It would just be a waste of money that you could use to beef up some other aspects of your laptop.
More than the amount of storage you need on your laptop, the type of storage you get is a lot more important.
When it comes to storage, you typically have two options. You can either get yourself a hard disk drive or a solid-state drive.
If you are someone who is using laptops for more than 10 years, then you would have a good idea about what a hard drive is. these are mechanical drives that are quite slow but are very cheap and can give you more capacity for little money.
The SSDs are the fastest storage devices you can find on the market. When compared to the mechanical drives, the assessees do not have any moving parts which give them the ability to fetch data a lot faster. Because of this, the reading and writing speed rockets and are in the range of more than 2GB/s for certain brands.
SSDs can look very expensive at first, but the performance will make up for it 10 times over. The solid-state drive is also are much more resistant to damage and shocks.
When selecting storage for your laptop, we recommend going with a solid-state drive rather than a mechanical drive. If you don’t have an issue with your budget, then we recommend getting the highest storage capacity you can.
If you’re on a budget, then we recommend getting a minimum of 128GB of solid-state drive storage. This might be small for the library you have, but having an SSD will make your life so easier. If you have a much bigger library, then you might want to go for 256GB SSD. Another advantage with SSDs is that as your storage size increases so does the writing and reading speeds.
You can also add more memory to your laptop by adding a hard drive that complements the SSD. This way you could get both speeds as well as the storage you need. You can install your operating system and other frequently used applications on the SSD while you keep all your old data on the hard drive.
Even if you are going for a complete SSD solution, we would recommend having a back up in the form of a cheap external hard drive. No one can tell when a laptop will fall apart and when it does, we want to make sure that you have a complete backup of all your stuff so that you can start again quickly.
As a DJ, you will be working in places with flashy lights and a lot of distractions. A good display will keep you hooked to your craft and will help you do much better.
Before we talk about anything, let us finalize the size that suits you best.
If you prefer portability over anything else, then a 13.3-inch laptop would be the perfect choice for you. most 13.3 inch laptops will weigh around 3 pounds which is quite easy to carry around. You can even use it with just one hand if you are an expert on it.
If you prefer a large screen over portability, then you should go with a 15.6-inch laptop. A bigger screen will give you a lot more real state so that you can see all the elements clearly without having to squint your eyes. But with a bigger screen, you also add a little bit of bulk to your laptop. Most 15.6 inch laptops will weigh around 5 pounds which adds quite a bit of weight.
You also have the option of going for a 17.3-inch laptop but we recommend against it as it is way too heavy and the extra screen size is just not worth it.
What resolution should I go for?
720p resolutions are a thing of the past. You should start with a minimum of 1080p resolution in this day and age.
Full HD resolution gives you the ability to see things more clearly. The colors on the display are more accurate and can even be true to life on certain laptops. If you choose to go with an IPS panel, then you will even get excellent viewing angles that are great for media consumption and, of course, DJing.
If you have the budget for it, you should go for a QHD or a 4K display. More resolution will give you better clarity and you can fit more elements of a DJ software on the same screen. Playing your favorite movies and TV shows on a higher resolution display will be a great experience as well.
Most DJs will work amid a lot of lights. In this case, you need to crank up the brightness to the maximum so that you can see everything on the screen clearly. We recommend a laptop with a maximum brightness of at least 400 nits so that you will get a bright screen even with brighter lights around.
We also recommend going for matte displays as they won’t reflect a lot and are a better choice when it comes to working in pubs and other places. Glossy displays do have their advantages, but for DJs, we think a matte display is a much better option.
Having a laptop with good battery life is a luxury that you don’t want to miss on.
When you’re working, in most cases, you’re going to be plugged in which means you don’t have to worry about battery life at work.
But we do recommend having a laptop that lasts as long as possible. Ideally, a laptop with all-day battery life is what we would shoot for. Laptops like the MacBook Pro and the ASUS ZenBook pro or excellent once when it comes to battery life.
If all-day battery life laptops are very expensive for your taste, then you can go with models that give you a standby time of at least 6 to 7 hours.
For a DJ laptop, good connectivity is essential.
You need to have a good number of essential ports to connect your accessories like DJ controller, midi keyboard, visual displays, DJ effect units, and other stuff.
For a start, we would recommend a laptop that comes with a USB type C port, USB type a port, and an HDMI port. When it comes to the USB ports, it will be better if they belong to generation 3.2 or 3.1. If your laptop could have a mini display port, he would definitely have an edge.
Your laptop also needs to have good wireless standards built-in. When it comes to Wi-Fi, you need at least 802.11AC WiFi. It is even better if you could get the latest WiFi 6 adapter on your laptop as well. You will also have a lot of advantages if you have the latest Bluetooth 5.0 adapter on your laptop as it gives you a much better range and connectivity.
Having a good keyboard and the trackpad is as important as the other aspects of your laptop.
The more your keyboard mimics the style of a mechanical keyboard, the better. The keys should have good travel and should give you an awesome typing experience. Though you aren’t going to be typing a lot as a DJ, it will come in handy when you need it.
Make sure that the keyboard comes with backlighting as well. If you are into making your laptop your own, then see if you have the option to customize the RGB colors in the backlighting which will give you a unique look and feel for your laptop.
The trackpad also needs to be quite good. If you’re going for a Windows machine, make sure the trackpad is a Windows precision trackpad. This way you can get a good touchpad and have a complete Windows experience. If you’re planning on getting a MacBook Pro, then you don’t have to worry about the trackpad as they are top of the line.
Your budget will also play a major role in selecting your laptop.
If you are just starting your Dj career, and if you’re short on money, you can get a decent laptop that will handle all your favorite DJ software without any issues. You may not have the most premium laptop experience but it is something that will propel you in the right direction.
If you don’t have any strings attached to your budget, then you can go all out and get the laptop of your dreams. Just be sure to not overspend on things that will make very little impact on your DJing.
The graphics card is probably the component that will make the least impact when it comes to DJing.
You will be perfectly fine with an integrated graphics card as it can handle your graphic requirements without any issues. It will even enable you to play some mid-range games if you want to help out the part-time game in you.
If you’re serious about gaming or if you want to do some heavy video editing, then you will need a dedicated graphics card. Depending upon your requirements, you can either go for a mid-range graphics card or a high-end one. Do take note that getting a dedicated graphics card will increase your overall expense considerably.
Finding the right laptop for your DJing needs might take some time if you’re doing on your own, but the result is always satisfying.
If you think you’re wasting a lot of time, we highly recommend picking a model that closely tends to your needs from the list above.
Do let us know if you have any questions about the devices we’ve mentioned. We’ll try to get back to you as soon as possible.
