Are you on the lookout for a quality IPS monitor that won’t break your bank? You’re in the right place. In this ASUS VZ239H-W review, we’re going to discuss this new monitor from the house of ASUS that will cost you less than $150. At this price, you’ve probably guessed by now that this is a basic offering, but the good news here is that this competes even with flagships when it comes to features.

The ASUS VZ239H-W does one thing well. It is not a monitor that flaunts one feature after another, but it nails the fundamentals like a boss. Anyone who is starting to game doesn’t have to spend a lot of money on a gaming monitor, that’s where this model comes in. Is this ASUS VZ239H-W model worth your hard-earned money? Let’s find that out in the full review below.

Design

The first impression of the ASUS VZ239H-W monitor is pretty good. Even though this is a budget monitor, the looks it has do make us feel like we’re onto a premium one. The monitor comes in white which may not be a fan favorite as it can stand out in your gaming room setup. If the black option is in stock, then you should go for it. The monitor looks even better in black.

The bezels around the display definitely get our attention. They are super slim and give this monitor a modern look. What surprises us is the fact that ASUS has given this budget monitor such a clean and contemporary look.

Let’s talk about the size of this display. We all know how big of a display this is. When looked from the sides, this display measures just about 7mm at the thinnest point, and it’s just crazy. The bottom bezel is the biggest of the lot as it hosts the company logo. It doesn’t do anything which makes it a bit of wasted space.

The stand of a monitor is one of the most important physical aspects. We have an aluminum stand here that comes with a nice build and a sturdy fit. It matches the look of the display in every way and compliments it nicely. Even when given a nice little push, the monitor holds its ground firmly which is awesome.

You can’t do a lot of things with the stand. You can tilt the monitor forward and backward which gives you a lot of freedom when playing games. That’s pretty much it which is when we realized that we’re dealing with a budget monitor. You can’t swivel, or height adjusts, or even pivot this display which would have been highly beneficial.

The ASUS VZ239H-W model comes with dimensions of 20.9 x 8.3 x 15.2 inches. This is a pretty sweet spot in terms of measurements for a budget gaming display. The monitor weighs around 6lbs so moving it around won’t be much of a hassle.

Another visible problem with this display is that there is no VESA compatibility. So you won’t be able to mount this display on the wall and can only use it on your table. Since you are, most likely, looking for a gaming monitor, this shouldn’t be that much of a big deal.

As an extra value, the monitor also comes with a couple of integrated speakers. These are 1.5W speakers and they do an average job at best. If you’re serious about the audio, then these speakers are not going to cut it. We recommend getting a nice set of gaming headphones for the best results.

Specs

Let’s talk specs. The ASUS VZ239H-W is a 23″ display that comes with full HD resolution. This 1080p monitor comes with a native aspect ratio of 16:9 that might look a bit outdated with modern games but that’s quite it. Having said that, this display is a very good choice for streaming media on your favorite platforms like Netflix or Amazon Prime Video.

The panel we have here is an IPS panel. The IPS panel is the best panel quality you can get which is nice to have on a budget display. The viewing angles on this monitor are quite good and you can get the same color quality from pretty much any angle, and that’s nice to have. This makes this a great display for catching up with friends over a weekend movie.

The ASUS VZ239H-W model comes with a contrast ratio of 1000:1. ASUS also has an ASUS Smart Contrast Ratio that is around 80M:1. Thanks to this contrast ratio, you will get excellent colors. The monitor is capable of distinctly displaying 16.7 million colors. This contrast ratio also gives us excellent blacks and whites, and also a very satisfying grayscale performance.

The anti-glare coating on the display needs a special mention. Without this, the display will reflect a lot. This is true especially when you gaming in a well-lit room. With this anti-glare coating in place, the reflections are reduced to a minimum and you won’t be distracted by your game face anymore.

The ASUS VZ239H-W comes with a maximum brightness of 250 nits. This is a decent max brightness and since you can control the lighting inside your house, you will do fine with this brightness level. When compared with high-end gaming displays this might be less but at this price point, you are getting a good deal.

Performance

The ASUS VZ239H-W does a very good job when it comes to performance. In terms of coverage, the monitor covers 75% of the NTSC color space which should give you vibrant images when gaming. It also covers 97% of the sRGB color space which makes this an accurate display when it comes to color representation (in this price point).

The monitor also has a good gamma setting out of the box. You can try adjusting it to suit your needs, but the setting out of the box works well in most scenarios. Try to mix and match it whether different values of saturation to get a much better picture on the screen, or simply leave it as such.

One of the common complaints you get with budget monitors is backlight bleed. Once you have a spot that bleeds, you can’t unsee it and it makes for a poor gaming experience. Fortunately, the ASUS VZ239H-W model does not come with any backlight bleeding. Even if your model has some, you can get in touch with ASUS and will replace it as soon as possible.

Gaming On The Asus VZ239H-W

To be honest, ASUS did not advertise the ASUS VZ239H-W model as a gaming monitor. It is a budget display that works well and happens to be a good one for gaming as well.

The refresh rate of this monitor is just 60Hz. Usually, gaming monitors come with a refresh rate of 144Hz or more to give a more fluid experience. Since we have a huge cut when it comes to savings, we don’t have the luxury of a high refresh rate. Gaming with the normal refresh rate isn’t bad by any means. There are occasional ghosting and motion blur, but we can’t anything about that.

The response time of the display is 5ms. Considering this is an IPS panel, this response time is not that bad at tall. You still get some motion blur, thanks to the normal refresh rate. In addition to the lack of features, the monitor does not have G-Sync as well.

Other Features

You get a decent amount of options when it comes to connectivity. There is an HDMI port that can be handy in connecting to a gaming console or your desktop computer. Right next to the HDMI port, you also have a DVI port that is handy for external connectivity too.

The monitor comes with essential features like flicker-free tech and blue light filters. The flicker-free technology helps in eliminating flickers that are harmful to the eyes. The blue light filter reduces the emission of blue light and can help in reducing the strain to your eyes when you sit in front of the monitor for long hours.

Asus VZ239H-W Review – Wrap Up

As far as budget monitors go, the ASUS VZ239H-W is one of the best ones you can get. It is an excellent choice as your desktop monitor, perfect for media consumption, and can also double up as a gaming monitor. If you’re on a strict budget and need a neat monitor, then this one should fit the bill.
