The Asus Zen book series is one of the best consumer-oriented laptop series out there. It gives you solid products that don’t cost a lot of money while making almost zero compromises. In this ASUS VivoBook 15 F512JA-AS34 review, we take a look at this new budget laptop from the house of ASUS.

When you think ZenBooks, you usually think of premium laptops. This budget laptop from the same series is present to change your view about the entire lineup. At just under $400 this is one of the best budget laptops out there without any doubt. But you don’t have to take our word for it, read the full review below, and see if this laptop that’s worth your money.

The design is nothing spectacular. The laptop comes within a plastic body in a subdued grey color and looks the price. When you look at this laptop, you know that this is a budget laptop. The Asus branding on the lid is spot on but you do miss the metal brush finish that you find on other Asus laptops.

The laptop also scores big when it comes to portability. With the weight of just 3.75lbs, this is one of the lightest 15.6-inch laptops out there. You can easily slide this laptop into your backpack and move along like nothing extra is there. The thickness of the laptop is also considerably less making it easier to fit in your backpack.

Let’s talk about the keyboard. The keyboard we have here is a full keyboard that comes with a dedicated number pad. The key layout on this keyboard is pretty good and they come with a key travel of 1.4mm which is alright for a laptop.

Here we have something called ErgoLift. This feature helps in lifting the deck of the laptop when you open it. As a result, the keyboard gets a 2° angle which makes typing a lot easier. This improves your typing experience by a mile and is not something you find in other laptops. The overall typing experience on this laptop is quite impressive and should come in handy if you are a writer or a blogger.

The trackpad on this laptop is a Windows precision one and it comes with full support for all the gestures you would want to make on this operating system. It has a smooth surface and working on it isn’t going to present you with any issues.

The display we have here is a 15.6“ LED-backlit display that comes with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This full HD resolution gives your crisp pictures and sharp text that make for a good viewing experience.

When opening the lid, the first thing you will notice is the narrow bezels. These bezels give this display screen to body ratio of 88% which is something that you find in high-end laptops. Thanks to these narrow bezels, the overall viewing experience is a lot better.

The panel we have here is a TN panel as opposed to an IPS panel we find in high-end laptops. This panel is not as accurate as an IPS panel and it shows. Colors are not that accurate and you also find a contrast ratio to be a bit disappointing. The display covers 58% of the SRGB color gamut and only 37% of the Adobe RGB color gamut which is pretty bad.

The display will be fine for everyday activities like web browsing, streaming videos, and a bit of office work. The color accuracy of this display does not make it suitable for stuff like photo editing and other color-related applications.

The laptop uses sonic Master technology to deliver audio which is a combination of both hardware and software. The overall audio output from the two speaker grills is pretty decent. The fact that they are bottom-firing speakers doesn’t directly sound in the users’ direction which makes it quite flat. This laptop is not going to win any awards in the audio category but for an evening of entertainment, it should pass.

Processing power

The processor that powers this ASUS VivoBook 15 F512JA-AS34 laptop is an Intel core i3 processor. This is the 10th generation ship from the house of Intel and it can clock up to a maximum of 3.4GHz which is a lot of power. The processor has two physical cores and four threads which makes it a good choice for entry-level and maybe a bit of mid-range computing.

The memory department on this laptop is fine with 8 gigs of DDR4 memory. This memory should be more than enough to tend to the needs of most entry-level and mid-range users. This RAM allows you to do efficient multitasking and helps you improve your productivity.

This combo is perfectly fine for an entry-level user like a student or a home user. You can do web browsing without any hiccups. You can even open 4 to 5 tabs on your favorite browser without slowing things down. You will also have a good time swimming videos on your favorite platforms like YouTube and Netflix. The overall performance of the laptop fits the price and no complaints there.

The storage we have on this ASUS VivoBook 15 F512JA-AS34 laptop is 128 GB solid-state drive. We are all presently surprised by the fact that we have a solid-state drive in a $400 laptop. This solid-state drive will change the way you use your laptop and will bring in performance enhancements whenever necessary.

Considering this is a budget laptop, that will happen more often than you think. This storage is miles better than a mechanical hard drive and we are very happy with the fact that Asus went with this one even if the capacity is a bit less. Talking about capacity, most light usage will be fine with this and if you want more, you can always go with the ASUS VivoBook 15 F512JA-AS34 that has the 256GB capacity.

Battery life

The laptop also comes with support for fast charging which means you will be able to charge after 60% of the battery capacity in just 49 minutes. This is very useful when you have to charge your laptop and you don’t have a lot of time.

This is a budget laptop, and as a result, we only have an integrated graphics card in this laptop. The including graphics card is a pretty good one as it has been improved over and over giving us a decent performance.

When it comes to meeting the graphics requirements of an entry-level user, this integrated GPU does a neat job. You will be able to play low-end games and also work on simple projects in graphics-related applications.
