The ASUS VivoBook 15 F512DA-DB34 is an affordable offering from the house of ASUS and comes with pretty good specs. If you’re looking to a piece of the famous VivoBook series, this laptop is a good place to start as it brings down the barriers.

At this price point, this laptop is a great fit for students, light users, and office goers who don’t need a lot of power. Under $500, there are a lot of laptop choices out there. But this ASUS notebook does give us a few reasons to have a good look at it. The most important question is, is this laptop worth your hard-earned money? Let’s find that out.

Design

The ASUS VivoBook 15 F512DA-DB34 is one of the well-designed laptops you will find in this affordable laptop category. The VivoBook series is full of devices that are made after careful consideration, and this one doesn’t deviate much from that ideology.

The laptop comes in a nice shade of grey and has a finish that is good to look and feel. You do miss the classic ASUS design on top of the laptop but this one is definitely for the best.

The first thing you notice is how light the laptop is. For 15.6” laptop, this is one way is just around 3.5lbs. This is probably the lightest laptop in this size category as most laptops would be around 5lbs. You can easily take this thing inside your backpack and can work on the go while traveling.

This laptop also comes with a smaller footprint. ASUS has done well in the design department to make this change and that has also contributed to making this one of the most portable 15.6“j laptops around.

Keyboard and Trackpad

The keyboard we have here is a full-size keyboard and it’s a pretty good one for the price. The keys are plastic and you do get some noise when you are on a typing marathon. This chiclet keyboard does a pretty good job when it comes to typing. The smaller arrow keys did not impress us much but you can get used to it.

This ASUS VivoBook 15 F512DA-DB34 comes with what ASUS calls the ErgoLift hinge. This is a smooth action that holds the display carefully while lifting the keyboard by 2 degrees. You get a better typing position and we have to say that it does help.

The dedicated number pad will surely come in handy for those who love to crunch numbers. Another surprising addition to this budget laptop is backlighting. We did not expect this and it did come quite handy when you need to work in dark conditions.

The trackpad on this device is a pretty good one and does what it supposed to. It has a smooth surface that doesn’t give you any friction when you need to make those fancy Windows gestures.

You will also find a fingerprint reader on the top right corner of the trackpad. This fingerprint reader allows you to log in to your user profile with a simple tap of a finger. Once you get used to this, typing a password will become an unnecessary chore.

Display

For the display, we have a 15.6“ LED-backlit one that comes with full HD resolution. This display is modern looking as it comes with a 4-way NanoEdge bezel. Thanks to these reduced bezels, the screen to body ratio is now an astonishing 88 percentage which is one of the main reasons why we have a much smaller laptop in our hands.

The display has an IPS panel and with that, you get a really impressive contrast ratio. The colors on the display are pretty good which means you will enjoy consuming media on your favorite platforms like Netflix and Prime Video. You also get fantastic viewing angles with this display which is always nice to have.

Processing Power

ASUS VivoBook 15 F512DA-DB34 laptop

The main component responsible for this laptop’s performance is the AMD Ryzen 3200U processor. This is a dual-core processor that comes with a base clocking frequency of 2.60GHz and a maximum clocking frequency of 3.50GHz. It has four threads and has a TDP of 12W.

When it comes to power, this is a decent entry-level laptop and does a pretty good job when it comes to handling your everyday applications. You will be able to browse the web, do your research, handle social media, and work on office staff, and do much more without any issues. If you want to do anything heavy, then the laptop might start giving issues but between staff shouldn’t be a problem.

The laptop comes with 8 gigs of RAM in the memory department that are DDR4 type. This memory is more than enough for most users who would want an entry-level laptop like this one. You can multitask without any restrictions which are pretty good at this price point.

Storage

Storage is one of the most important components of a laptop. You can either make your life busy or can slow things down miserably. In this laptop, we have 128GB solid-state drive storage. Now, this might look like very little storage which is true, but it also has a solid-state drive which is great for performance.

ASUS has made an excellent decision by going for a solid-state drive instead of a mechanical hard drive. They could have probably given you a much higher capacity mechanical hard drive but it would have slowed the system down significantly. This SSD boots the operating system in just a few seconds and handles applications and everyday user interfaces without any hiccups.

Graphics Performance

The graphics performance of this ASUS VivoBook 15 F512DA-DB34 is pretty decent. It comes with an integrated AMD Radeon Vega 3 graphics card and it’s quite good for entry-level gaming and graphics applications. You can also try your hand at a little bit of photo editing but anything complex might slow things down to a noticeable level.

As far as games are concerned, you will be able to play online games like WoW without any issues. If you don’t mind reducing the settings, you will even be able to play some mid-range games as well.

Battery Life

The battery life of this laptop is pretty good. With light use, you should be able to get around 5 to 6 hours of battery life which is decent for the price you’re paying. If you plan to do something heavy, then this number will go down significantly.

Connectivity

The connectivity options you get on this ASUS VivoBook are plenty. You get one USB 3.1 type C port which is very versatile when it comes to common use. You can transfer data, charger laptop, and even use it to connect your laptop to external displays.

The laptop comes with one USB 3.1 type A port, and a couple of USB 2.0 ports. These are perfect for data transfer but as not as fast as the USB type C port. There is also an HDMI port that allows you to connect with higher-end devices. In addition to these, you also get a microSD card reader and an audio jack.

The device also comes with 802.11ac Wi-Fi which is quite fast and has Bluetooth 4.1 built-in.

ASUS VivoBook 15 F512DA-DB34 – Summary

This ASUS VivoBook 15 F512DA-DB34 has an excellent entry-level laptop that does not cost you anything more then what it’s worth. The processing power of this laptop is quite good and is perfect for students and light users alike. With eight gigs of RAM in the memory department, you can multitask all you want.

At this price point, there is very little competition for this laptop. Thanks to the presence of an AMD processor, this laptop is a lot cheaper and is more accessible to people on a budget. If you’re looking for a simple laptop that comes at an affordable price point without compromising on performance, then this one is perfect.
