Gaming on a budget is a dream for many as most budget gaming laptops won’t give you the desired performance. With the Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 laptop, ASUS is trying to change that. This is a very affordable gaming laptop that comes with all the essentials and even more.

The laptop is aimed at gamers, both light and heavy, who are on a tight budget. Don’t take us wrong, this is not a cheap laptop. You still have to pay decent money for this device, but the performance per dollar is very good when you compare it with other high-end laptops. Is this worth your hard-earned money? Let’s find out in the full review below.

Design

The Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 is one of the best-designed gaming laptops out there. It comes in a nice black color that is perfect for a gaming machine. The laptop also comes with nice ridges in multiple places and also has the traditional ASUS design DNA as well.

Despite being a 15.6″ laptop, this laptop weighs just 4.85lbs which is a lot less in comparison. You can take this laptop with you for gaming parties and competitions without any problem. The bezels around the display are shrunk considerably giving the laptop a nice, modern look.

The keyboard on this Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 laptop is a hyperstrike keyboard that comes with excellent durability. It holds the standard for military durability and does well when it comes to handling rough use.

As far as typing is concerned, you will have a sweet experience on this keyboard. Gaming is also quite fun as the keys have nice feedback letting you know what you’ve done. The keyboard here comes with single backlighting that can be customized to suit your needs.

There is also a dedicated number pad if you’re someone who loves to work with numbers. The keyboard is tested for 20 million keystrokes and should hold good for a long time. The trackpad is a pretty decent one and works as advertised. The webcam is also a good one but nothing extraordinary.

The cooling system on this laptop is also pretty impressive. The heat pipes are effective in keeping the temperature down and you can get a more sustained performance when the temperature is controlled. Most high-end games will run fluidly because of this handy cooling system.

Display

The display we have on the Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 is a 15.6″ LED-backlit 1080p display. This is a regular full HD display that you can find in gaming laptops. It is a pretty good job when it comes to color reproduction and picture quality.

The display comes with an IPS panel which is a lot better than TN or VA panels. Thanks to the IPS panel, you get an excellent contrast ratio and also nice color accuracy. You also get very good viewing angles which can make your viewing experience more than pleasant.

The display also comes with a refresh rate of 120Hz which is better than the usual 60Hz. This refresh rate helps in minimizing the motion blur to a minimum. This does not compare with displays that have a refresh rate of 144Hz or more but does a much better job than the ones with just a 60Hz refresh rate.

The audio coming out of this laptop is decent. As this is a gaming laptop, most of us are going to use a gaming headphone anyway. But if you want to use the speakers, then you should be fine unless you’re an audiophile. The audio can get very loud, and you don’t get a lot of distortions even at the highest volumes. But if you’re serious about sound quality, you should stick with your high-end gaming headphone.

Processing Power

Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 gaming laptop

The processor that powers the Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 laptop is an AMD Ryzen 5 3550H processor. This is a quad-core processor that comes with 8 threads and has a base frequency of 2.1GHz and a maximum clock speed of 3.7GHz which is a lot of power for an average gamer.

The laptop does a pretty good job with this processor at its helm. Most people these days prefer an Intel chip over AMD, but this one does a fine job when it comes to taking care of your everyday needs. You can run any game you want on this laptop and the processor won’t be the bottleneck in any way.

The memory situation on this ASUS laptop is also quite good. We have 16 gigs of DDR4 RAM and that’s perfect for running games smoothly without any hiccups. This memory also gives you the ability to multitask without any restrictions. You can run virtual machines, work on your videos, develop apps, and do a lot more with this processor and RAM combo in place.

Storage and Connectivity

The storage we have on this gaming laptop is a 512GB NVMe solid-state drive. This is pretty good storage as it brings both space and also the speed you deserve. The reading and writing speeds of this storage are very good allowing you to move even GBs of data within a few seconds.

The SSD boots the operating system in a few seconds and also launches all games without making you wait a lot. In fact, the waiting times for games are almost non-existent for mid-range and upper mid-range games.

You get quite a few connectivity options on this gaming laptop. There are a couple of USB 3.1 Type-A ports, a USB 2.0 port, an HDMI port, an Ethernet port, and an audio jack. These ports are super important and will be used on a daily basis.

The disappointing thing here is that you don’t get a USB Type-C port. With that port, we could have confidently said that this laptop is future proof in terms of connectivity, but sadly, it’s not.

You also have built-in WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity as well. The 802.11ac WiFi does a neat job in giving you high-speed internet access (depends on your plan) while Bluetooth 4.1 is perfect for wireless external connectivity.

Graphics Performance

The graphics card we have on the Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 laptop is an Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060. This is a high-end graphics card from the house of Nvidia and it comes with a dedicated video RAM of 8GB that is of DDR6 type. This GPU is based on the Turing architecture but does not come with support for Ray Tracing and Deep Learning Sampling System (DLSS) like the RTX 2070 or 2080 GPUs.

The performance of the GPU is pretty good. It is similar to that of the GTX 1070 but falls short of the desktop RTX 2060 graphics card. You can even run the most taxing games without any problems. Games like Death stranding, Gear Tactics, and other titles run fine even with ultra settings which is awesome.

Apart from gaming, the graphics performance of this GPU comes in handy for video editing, modeling, animation, and other graphically-demanding applications.

Battery Life

Battery life is not one of the best features of the Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 laptop, and sort of we knew it. Gaming laptops are known for their miserable battery life and it’s not something most gamers care about.

Having said that, you can still get a decent battery life when you’re not gaming. If you doing something light like web browsing, video streaming, social media, and light office work, then this laptop can last for about 5 to 6 hours without any issues.

Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 Review – Summary

The Asus TUF FX505DV-EH54 is an impressive gaming laptop, to say the least. The laptop comes at an affordable price and brings a lot of good stuff to the table. With the GPU in place, you’ll be able to play pretty much any game there is without any issues. The processor, RAM, and storage are all high-end leading to fine user experience. If you’re looking for a compromise-free and affordable gaming laptop, this is probably the right one for you.
